<正>Eric Hobsbawm is arguably the preeminent Western Marxist historian,author of the magisterial four-volume survey of Western/World history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries:THE AGE OF REVOLUTION 1789-1848,THE AGE OF CAPITAL 1848-1875,THE AGE OF EMPIRE 1875-1914, AND THE AGE OF EXTREMES 1914-1991.A Fellow of the British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences,he taught at Birkbeck College of the University of London until his retirement,and since then at the New School for Social Research in New York.Now in his nineties,he sums up his vision of the structure and direction of our global present and future in several interviews and lectures granted in Britain,and compiled in three recent publications:THE NEW CENTURY,published in 2000,and ON EMPIRE:AMERICA,WAR AND GLOBAL SUPREMACY and GLOBALISATION, DEMOCRACY AND TERRORISM,published in 2008.In them he discusses the end of the Cold War. war and peace at the turn of the century,the end of the communist project in Soviet Union and China,the State of the Left in the Western world and Britain’s New Labour,globalization and the modern world economy,American hegemony,the new terrorism,world environmental challenges,and the nature of social and other inequalities in the new century.
