Background & Aims: Perioperative oral nutritional supplementation is a convenient intervention assist elderly people with hip surgery rehabilitation.However, some authors hold the view that it cannot be recommended as routine nutritional supplementation of elderly hip surgery patients.This study intends to determine whether oral nutritional supplementation is benefit for people aged over 65 years with hip surgery.Methods: We searched the databases PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for articles published up to October 2012.Randomized controlled trials of oral supplement intervention for elderly people with hip surgery were included.Results: 10 articles involving 986 participants met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis.The combined trials showed the oral nutritional supplementation had a positive effect on the serum total protein (P<0.00001).Besides,there was a significant decline on complications (P=0.0005).Furthermore, data for the infection groups were significant decline: wound infection (P=0.02), respiratory infection (P=0.04), and urinary tract infection (P=0.03).However, the change of serum albumin after oral multination feeds was clinical uptrend, although not reach the statsfically improvement (P=0.46).The oral nutritional supplementation showed no significant statistical effect on mortality (P=0.17) than control remedies.Conclusions: Based on the evidences available for serum total protein, complications, wound infection, respiratory infection, and urinary tract infection, this meta-analysis is consistent with the perioperative oral nutritional supplementation can help elderly people with hip surgery rapid recovery and reducing complications.For the serum albumin and mortality with high heterogeneity, more large randomized controlled trials should be needed.
