Zygomycetes comprise a diverse fungal group of ancient terrestrial fungi, which are mainly soil inhabitants but also cause devastating diseases in humans. Two types of zygomycoses are known: entomophthoromycoses caused by members of the Entomophthorales and mucormycoses caused by members of the Mucorales.Whilst entomophthoromycoses are known form immunocompetent patients, mucormycoses occur in immunocompromised patients. The lecture focuses on the reconstruction of the evolution of pathogenesis among these fungi.
