Impacts of Forest Road Maintenance Policies on Log-Truck Routing Selection

  Timber industry cost reduction policies has long been forest-industry focus for centuries.More than 30 percentage of the total log product cost is associated with log-truck travel distance.Studies indicated the impact of travel distance,however the impact of forest road maintenance policies on log-truck routing selection is still unclear.Forest roads regarding to its maintenance levels can have different speed limitations and functions.Roads with certain maintenance level will have to be decommissioned,in turn,it will affect log-truck route selection.In this study,the researchers assessed the travel-time between wood mills and timber production areas while considering forest road maintenance policies via Dijkstra algorithms and closest facility method.Results shows statistical significant difference in routing under different maintenance policies,however,the current objective maintenance policy makes no significant difference on route selection than under operational maintenance policy.Results also indicate that the routing solution in the best scenario(rehabilitation polices)can be achieved by only improving around 14 to 22 miles of forest routes in Oregon with the lowest maintenance level to the next better maintenance level.
