2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BD) is one of the green platform chemicals with wide application in industry. The production of 2,3-BD from renewable sources was achieving more attention due to the less toxicity of 2,3-BD and the wide spectrum of substrate for bacteria. With the utilization of natural sources or industry byproducts as carbon source,a variety of impurities were introduced into the fermentation broth, thus increased the difficulty of product recovery. In this study the recovery of 2,3-BD from fermentation broths produced from renewable sources were introduced.Salting-out extraction (SOE) is technique based on partition difference of product in the two phases consisting inorganic salts and organic solvents. In the recovery of 2,3-BD the SOE consisted of hydrophilic solvents showed higher yield than hydrophobic ones.During the separation of 2,3-BD from fermentation broth prepared with Dioscorea zingiberensis and glucose,a yield of 97% for 2,3-BD was obtained and 87% residual sugars,99% cells,94% soluble proteins and most of organic acids were removed from the 2,3-BD-rich phase by mixing 22% ethanol and 26% K2CO3 (w/w) with the fermentation broth. In the treatment of Jerusalem artichoke-based fermentation broth prepared by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation 99% 2,3-BD was recovered, about 98% of solid matters was removed, and the viscosity decreased from 72.5 mPa?s in the original fermentation broth to 4.4 mPa?s in the top phase by a combination of low speed centrifugation and SOE consisted of 19% Ethanol and 20% K2HPO4 (w/w).The SOE system formed by inorganic salts and solvent with weak polarity showed high efficiency in removal of coloring matters. The fermentation broth from sugarcane molasses is dark brown and the coloring matters did not have obvious partition difference in the two phases formed by ethanol and phosphate. When using SOE systems based on carbonate and butanol or ethyl acetate most of coloring matters in the broths were partitioned to the bottom phase, thus about 95% coloring matters could be removed.
