The health risk assessment and toxicological studies have mainly focused on the single compound. However, humans and other organisms are exposed to multi-component chemical mixtures. The joint effects of these chemicals have not been well studied and characterised. The aim of the project is to evaluate the joint effects of the commonly found contaminant mixtures containing PAH and heavy metals/metalloid and therefore to provide more reliable data of the proper health risk assessment. To this end we evaluated genotoxic effects of the mixture containing 4 PAH compounds including benzo(a)pyrene, a potent carcinogen as reference compound, and 5 heavy metals/metalloid in human cells using a standard genotoxic assay, micronucleus test. The results showed that the mixtures of PAHs and heavy metals exert more toxicity to human cells than their individual compounds but not significant combined effects on genotoxcity. However, heavy metals/metalloid including Cd, Cr and Ads increased the genotoxicity induced by B(a)P.Future work will include the evaluation the effects of spiked soil and real.environmental samples. The results from this study will not only provide reliable data for proper risk assessment of these compounds but also expend our knowledge on mixture toxicology and health risk assessment.
