何谓景教?景净云:“真常之道,妙而难名。功用昭彰,强称景教。”日人佐伯好郎对景净何以名其教为景提出了四点推测:其一,弥施诃乃世之光,而景字第一义即光明之意;其二,景通京,京为大之意,故景有大光明之意;其三,当时长安有密宗“大日教”势力,景教为扶植势力而加以利用;其四,道教有《黄庭内外景经》,给景教一定暗示~([1])。朱谦之以为,景教是一种具有波斯文化色彩而在进入唐朝之后又沾染中国文化特色的崭新的基督教~([2]),一个只能称为唐朝汉语式的景教。

[2] A Nestorianism that can only be called the Tang Chinese language.
