The world must change the energy strategy towards safe carbon-free systems since Fukushima and Chernobyl, the many catastrophic oil spills, the rising cost of finite mineral energy resources and the spiralling health cost caused by conventional polluting, risky power plants, fossil fuel heating systems and fossil fuel driven mobility.Future energy investment decisions must be based on the full costing principle, including all the external social cost and risks.Electric and clean fuel vehicles are much more economic than conventional ones.Methanol is the universal clean future fuel for all energy needs from building comfort to industry and mobility on the ground and in the air.The external social cost comprise the health cost due to pollution and damages to the environment and climate, whereby the cost of flooded islands and coastal regions from rising ocean levels due to global warming can hardly be quantified, as well as the value of the many lives of people killed in weather disasters or cancers from nuclear radiation and pollution.By means of the international standard ISO 13602-1 for energy systems analyses the true, total energy cost, including by-products, side effects, risks and life cycles of energy systems can be calculated.International ISO and IEC standards are indispensable to specify, certify, finance and implement future energy systems. The oldest clean sustainable energies are the sun, geothermal resources, biomass, wind and hydropower, lately complemented by ocean waves, tides and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems. Some of them depend on varying weather conditions and seasonal cycles needing storage, but they are more and more competitive with non-renewable systems thanks to lower external cost and less dependency on the speculative fuel commodities coal, petroleum, gas and lethal uranium with their ever increasing prices until total depletion. The world economy needs thousands of GW base-load electric power in view of the modernization of life and a rapidly increasing number of electric vehicles which have to be recharged. The GW base-load energy system GEOCOGEN of the 4th generation can be built safely where energy is needed, thus avoiding high transmission cost and losses from remote locations.
