To evaluate the heavy metal pollution status of Chagan Lake, the total concentrations of Hg,Pb,Cu,Zn,Cd,Cr,Ni and Fe in 11 species of fish were investigated. The concentrations of Hg,Pb,Cd,Cr,Ni,Cu,Zn,Fe in the muscles were 0.001-0.022,0.11-0.82,N.D.( not detected)-0.08,0.01-0.34,N.D.-0.69,0.20-13.35,5.52-40.43,6.12-18.38μg/g for fresh weight, respectively. The highest Hg,Cd,Ni,and Cr concentrations were found in perch sleeper;the highest values of Pb,Zn,and Fe were found in sharpbelly and the highest Cu concentrations were found in shrimps. The average Pb concentrations of a few fish species were greater than the intemational standards and the national standards of China established for Pb.The maximum safe consuming quantity of the fish was estimated as 865.7g/70kg body weight/week according to the recommended values of provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI)established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives. This value is more than two times of the current quantity consumed by local residents ( 350g/70 kg body weight/week).This investigation indicated that the historical pollution of the Second Songhua River has not caused the Hg bioaccumulation in muscles of fish from Chagan Lake. The present consumption of fish from Chagan Lake would not cause food safety problems with respect to the metals investigated.
