Biologically produced 1,3-propanediol is a promising materials because its application for bio-PTT (Poly(trimethylene terephthalate).However,in the biological production of 1,3-propanediol,carboxylic acids by-produced in 1,3-propanediol fermentation make separation processes difficult.In this study,aqueous two phases extraction composed of hydrophilic alcohols and salts was suggested as cost effective separation process for 1,3-propanediol.In the presence of succinic and lactic acis,only 1,3-propanediol was selectively extracted from their aqueous solutions and extraction efficiency for 1,3-propanediol was above 60%.The ability of alcohols for phase separation follows the order: isopropanol>ethanol>methanol,which is accordance with the order of polarity of alcohols.In all alcohol/salt ratios,the yield of dibasic salt was higher than that of tribasic salt.Compared with other primary separation processes for 1,3-propanediol,aqueous two phases extraction has the advantage of low energy consumption and high separation yield for 1,3-propanediol.
