Plants maintain stem cells in their meristems as a source of new cells to sustain lifelong growth, thus stem cells must possess effective DNA damage responses that prevent the propagation of mutations to large parts of the plant body, yet the molecular links between these processes remain largely unexplored.We here report that SUMO E3 ligase AtMMS21 acts to maintain root stem cell niche by mediating DNA damage responses.
