Once overlooked as cellular detritus, microRNA or miRNA (small RNA fragments) appears as a star in biological sciences recently.MicroRNAs are single-stranded RNA of 18-24 nucleotides in length, and are generated from an endogenous transcript that contains a local hairpin structure.MiRNA functions as a guide molecule in posttranscriptional gene silencing by partially base pairing with the 3-untranslated region of the target mRNAs, leading to translational repression.By silencing various targets, miRNAs have key roles in diverse regulatory pathways, including control of tissue development, cell differentiation, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and tumor formation.It now appears that some miRNAs discovered in the human genome contribute to the development of cancer.Although the number of reported human miRNAs is now over 700, only a handful of them have been functionally annotated.
