Spinal cord injury (SCI) is devastating, affecting hundreds of thousands in USA,with thousands more diagnosed each year (National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center,2013).Although tremendous progress has been made in recent years, effective treatments for significant recovery remain to be developed.Neural circuit assembly during development involves a series of highly regulated steps. The late steps of neural circuit may be influenced or even specified by target-derived signals, including neural stem cell survival and differentiation,den-dritic patterning, axonal projection, and synapse formation (Park and Poo,2013).Circuitry within the lumbar spinal cord integrates afferent information from descending and segmental sources to coordinate the patterned firing of motor neuron pools. This command structure breaks down after SCI.Many strategies to restore locomotion after thoracic SCI have focused on approaches aimed at reactivating the lumbar neural circuit.
