Animal personality refers to consistent individual differences in behavior. The two extreme types of personality, cautiousness or boldness of 10 indoor captive-bred adult male Mandarin voles (Lasiopodomys mandarinus) ,were examined in this study.Mirror-image stimulation was used to test the types of personalities of subjects. In order to distinguish the types of personalities between individuals,19 behaviors were recorded and the characteristics of these behaviors were analyzed. The results were as follows: 1) Mirror-image stimulation was found to be a suitable test of the personality of mandarin voles, and could be used to easily characterize an individuals personality; 2) Personality could be characterized as cautious or bold.Cautious individuals most often moved or were motionless at the rear of the test area and explored the corners or side of the area.Bold individuals most often explored near the mirror and attacked their mirror-image; and 3) The distribution of a bold individuals activity was mostly at the higher risk area or in front of the mirror. For cautious individuals their activity was distributed mostly at the side of the area or they huddled at the rear. That is,the exploring ability of bold animals is generally stronger than that of cautious animals. This study indicated that mirror-image stimulation can be used in identifying rodents personalities.
