[留学生]一词的使用始于日本人。唐代,日政府派遣使臣来我国汲取先进文化,由于使臣是外交使节,不便在中国滞留时间过长,为了保证充分地汲取中国文化,日本政府从第二次派遣遣唐使时,同时派遣[留学生]与[还学生],所谓[留学生],是当遣唐使回国后仍然留在中国学习的学生;[还学生]则是随同遣唐史一同回国的学生。[留学生]一词就这样被沿用下来。 The use of the term “foreign student” starts in Japanese.
