研究厚皮与薄皮两类不同生态型的甜瓜表明:甜瓜两子叶一心时便开始花芽分化,3—4真叶后分化显著加快。第1子蔓较第2子蔓分化慢,生长势弱。花芽按萼片→花瓣→雄蕊→雌蕊向心分化,各分化期与花原基大小相关。分化之初花原基无性别差异,当长为0.6—0.7毫米时可鉴别雌雄。最初,每节具花原基2—8个或更多,但雌花节仅一个原基得以发育,其他退化。出雌率,孙蔓>子蔓>主蔓。薄皮甜瓜达到同样生理苗龄的时间比厚皮甜瓜短,花、叶、茎分化快;但生理苗龄相同时,后者较前者的分化数多。
