The first session of the National Games was held in Beijing from September 13 to October 3, 1959. The leaders of the Party and state including Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, He Long, Dong Biwu, Peng Zhen, Li Xiannian and Ye Jianying attended the opening ceremony. At the opening ceremony, a large-scale group exercise called “National Celebration.” 10,658 athletes from 30 delegations from provinces, cities, autonomous regions and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army took part in the competition. This session of the National Games a total of 32 competitions. These are: Athletics, Swimming, Weightlifting, Shooting, Archery, Gymnastics, Water Polo, Diving, Martial Arts, Roads
