长白山天池是火山喷发形成的我国最大的火山口湖,也是松花江、图们江、鸭绿江三江之源。因为它所处的位置高,水面海拔达2150米,所以被称为“天池”。天池呈椭圆形,周围长约13多公里,南北长4.85公里,东西宽3.35公里,湖面面积10多平方公里,平均水深204米(据说中心水深处达373米),蓄水20亿立方米,是一个巨大的天然水库。在天池周围环绕着16个山峰,天池犹如是镶在群峰之中的一块碧玉,使人如临仙境。不过,长白山气候瞬息万变,使得天池若隐若现,故绘出了天池“水光潋滟晴方好,山色空蒙雨亦奇”的绝妙景象。
