北京昌平縣明陵埋葬了除洪武、建文、景泰帝之外的十三個皇帝,故稱十三陵。至於他們的妃嫔死后葬在何處,却很少有人過問。其實這也是明王朝政治制度、宫廷生活的縮影,是值得研究探讨的。因记载不全,明朝妃嬪准確数字很难查實。《明史》后妃傳中,妃嬪在册的并不多。但從她們的墓葬實地看,其人數當不少,比較集中的有以下几处: 明初太祖、成祖、仁宗、宣宗的妃嬪,大多陪皇帝殉葬了。《历代陵寢备考》记載,太祖以四十六妃陪葬孝陵其中所殉惟宫人十数人;長陵十六妃從葬,位號不俱;仁宗殉五妃,其餘三妃以年終别葬金山;宣宗諸妃俱陪葬景陵,惟一妃别葬金山。
