1 Introduction The supply of conventional petroleum is decreasing while heavy oil resources in the world exceed 600 million tons, so heavy oil will become an important energy source in the 21~(st) century. Most of the crude oil in China is fairly heavy and vacuum residue with boiling point higher than 500℃ accounts for 40%—60% of crude oil, even higher than 60% in heavy crude.
