本文围绕A.S.拜厄特的小说《静物》中女主人公斯蒂芬尼·波特的“意外”死亡情节,探讨作家蕴含其中的对女性自处问题的思考。文章指出,斯蒂芬尼作为上世纪50年代的知识女性,虽有着清醒的自我意识和人生理想,但是在当时女性“回归家庭”的社会思潮中,她一面遵循传统女性规范牺牲自我,一面又默默忍受失去自我的煎熬,直至一个“意外”夺走她年轻的生命。作家借斯蒂芬尼英年早逝的悲剧,不但揭露了当时英国性别意识形态对女性自我发展的扼杀,还表达了她对社会转型期一些知识女性由于自身性格缺陷,无力在传统身份与现代自我发展之间的冲突中突围、最终导致悲剧人生的反思。
This article focuses on the “accidental” death episode of the heroine Stephanie Porter in A.S. Byatt’s The Still Life, and probes into the writer’s thinking on the problem of women’s self-esteem. The article points out that as a knowledgeable woman in the 50s of last century, although having a clear sense of self-awareness and ideal of life, Stephanie, at the time of the social trend of women returning to the family, abided by the traditional norms of women and sacrificed themselves. Silently endure the torment of losing oneself until one “accidental” takes away her young life. By tracing Stephanie’s tragedy of young age, the author not only exposed the British gender ideology stifled the self-development of women, but also expressed her opinion that some knowledgeable women in the transitional period of social transformations, due to their own personality defects and inability to cooperate with traditional identities and modern self-development Breakthrough in the conflict between, eventually leading to a reflection of tragedy life.
