The Danish Blood Donor Association is a non-profit, unofficial association that works independently. The purpose of the association is to provide a sufficient number of blood donors at any time in any place in Denmark. Of the 5.2 million resident population, there are 250,000 registered donors, which account for about 10% of adults aged 18 to 60 years. To meet the needs of 5.2 million Danish people, about 375,000 blood donations are done each year. On average, each blood donor has to donate blood 1.5 times a year. Another aim of the association is to ensure that Denmark’s blood and blood products are self-sufficient, without using blood from other countries. This is because these countries also need these blood and consider it for safety reasons. Danish blood donors have a high quality of blood, ensuring that their blood products have minimal risk of transmitting infectious diseases. The association has established a Danish policy of blood donation to protect the legitimate interests of donors. All Danish donors are voluntary and free, but local authorities will pay for each blood donation in accordance with the law concerning blood.
