随着多媒体应用的不断深入,高色彩、高分辩的图形处理,以及3D着色所需的大量纹理缓冲内存,使得现在的PCI显卡不堪重负。于是AGP显卡应运而生,它克服了PCI显卡设备的种种缺陷。简单地说,AGP是继ISA总线、EISA总线、VESA总线、PCI总线之后,在PC机上出现的一个新的总线形式,只不过它不像以前的总线类型那样,由一组设备共享带宽,而是作为一个专门用于图形处理的通道。正因为它只支持一个AGP设备,所以它现在还不可能取代PCI,只能与PCI共存。
