为了适应抗战形势和边区建设的需要,党中央和边区政府极为重视发展科技教育。边区科技教育经历了一个从无到有、探索前进、逐步成熟的过程,初步形成了以高等科技教育为主,中等技术教育为辅的培养模式。在开展科技教育的过程中既注重基础科学知识的学习,又重视专门技术的培养,同时坚持理论联系实际,确立了教育与生产相结合的原则,还注意把思想政治工作与业务学习紧密结合,培养“又红又专”的科技人才。抗战时期陕甘宁边区的科技教育培养和锻炼了一大批科技人才和管理干部,对改变边区落后社会面貌、促进边区经济的发展和保证抗日战争的最后胜利起到了重大作用。
