Hammer ribozymes do not inhibit hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication in the cell, so hairpin ribozymes were studied in this paper. First, a combinatorial screening method was used to identify hairpin cyclic ribozymes that inhibit HBV replication. Experimental hairpin loop ribozyme libraries were used to determine possible target sites for the 3.3 kb HBV pregenomic RNA transcribed in vitro.
