一宁武自秦汉以来就是边关重地,是连接内地和北方的通道,御敌戍边的要塞,金戈铁马,烽火连天,是兵家必争之地。抗辽名将杨业父子曾屯兵戍边于宁武境内。明成化二年(1466年),在今县城设宁武关,统领三关(宁武关、雁门关、偏头关)军务。明末三关总镇周遇吉与李自成义军鏖战宁武关,兵败以身殉国。特殊的历史环境和山川形势造就了宁武人民勤劳勇敢、不屈不挠、质朴好义的豪放性格。历史上民众与历代戍边将士休戚与共,为华夏民族的历史谱写了辉煌篇章,构成气吞山河的边关军事文化。
