Wang Anshi (1021-1086) was a progressive politician and thinker who led the reform movement in the middle of the Northern Song Dynasty. In the dauntless spirit of “becoming less awed by fear of ancestors, lawlessness of ancestors, people claim inadequate,” he held a long and fierce struggle with the stubborn conservative forces that insisted on Confucianism and opposing the law. Lenin, the great leader of the proletariat, praised him as “the reformer of China in the 11th century” (“Revising the Land Program for Workers’ Parties,” Collected Works of Lenin, Vol. 10, p. 152). In 1069, Emperor Song Zong Zhao Zong appointed Wang Anshi to be a member of the government. In the following year, he appointed another prime minister, and began a famous transformation movement. The reform lasted for 16 years (1069-1085). Although it failed last, its historical impact was enormous.
