1928年2月中央研究院气象研究所成立,竺可桢出任所长.任职期间,他致力于测候人员的培养、任用以及地方测候所、气象台建设与日常工作指导等,为我国地方测候事业的发展作出卓越贡献.馆藏1929年至1941年间竺可桢为各地测候所选址建筑、购买仪器、选聘人才等事宜致相关机构负责人的信函,集中反映了民国时期中国地方测候事业的发展历程.
