十年“文革”,荒芜了舞台,贻误了演员。粉碎“四人帮”以后,舞台演出活跃起来,而演员队伍却显示出青黄不接的现象。《中国戏剧》（原《戏剧报》）的同志们看到了这种情况,为尽快推出优秀中青年演员,使戏剧舞台上后继有人,于1983年创办了“中国戏剧梅花奖”（该奖项先由《中国戏剧》主办,后由中国剧协主办、《中国戏剧》承办,现由中国文联和中国剧协主办、《中国戏剧》承办）。由于梅花奖是应运而生,从一开始就得到社会各界的广泛关注和热情支持。
