The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most famous annual2 horse race， and it is also one of the most important festivals and events in Australia. The Melbourne Cup has a long history. Its first race was held in 1861. Generally， the event starts at 3 p.m. on the first Tuesday in November and is called “the race that stops a nation” by local people， because most of Australians will take a break on this day to watch the game. People can get there by driving or taking trains， trams， ships or taxi.
The Melbourne Cup is a perfect combination3 of sports， food， wine， fashion， business and social contact in Melbourne and Australia.
Sports mean the horse race itself and the biggest award in this event is called “Win” which means putting all the bet on the first-place horse. In 2018， the winner received 4 million Australian dollars at last.
In addition to horse racing， the biggest focus is the fashion show during this event. There are two meanings of “cup” in “Melbourne Cup”. One is a prize and the other is a hat. Therefore， ladies often wear a particularly fancy4 hat to attend this event， and men will also dress up and compete. In short， the dress code of Melbourne Cup must be formal5 clothes instead of the ones like jeans and sneakers. At the end of the event， the most fashionable men and women will get rich prizes.
