As early as the early 20th century, researchers found that the flowering and maturation of many plants are related to the relative length of day and night, that is, the photoperiod. That is, these plants must bloom in light for a certain period of time, otherwise they have been vegetatively vegetated. Curiously, however, cultivated tomato varieties are not sensitive to light time compared to wild tomato varieties from South America. These tomato varieties bloom at almost the same time, regardless of whether they receive 12 hours of light or 16 hours of light.
