明清鼎革之际,陈洪绶为何不生取义、慷慨死节?本文从“辞禄臣与乞食人”、“骨肉爱根谁断得”和“中兴画学传後世”等三个方面分别作深入探讨。管陈洪绶曾捐贡以求功名,书画却从来不祗是他生存的手段。“中兴画学”虽於他辞世前才有所表述,然而喜好和专研书画,实是他终身不渝的志趣。清初王夫之、黄宗羲、顾炎武等学者分析明亡之际士人“死社稷、死城守、君亡与亡”的事例,陈洪绶的所作所为是否可看作是与“君亡与亡”之背道而驰?本文强调的老莲晚年的心路历程表明,没有走上“成仁”之途的他,恰恰於此迸发出自身生命最为成功的艺术光辉。
