Inhibitory Control is the ability of an individual to purposely and proactively exclude or reduce the interference of unrelated information and inhibit the predominant thinking or reaction, including three important components of accessibility, deletion and repression. Individuals who are abused during childhood are prone to interfere with information processing and can not effectively remove current irrelevant information and inhibit the dominant response. Childhood abuse also impairs the maturation and attachment of the anterior cingulate cortex, frontal gyrus, and temporal lobe in the brain, and these brain regions are important neurophysiological bases for the suppression of the development of control functions. Future research should focus on the impact of emotional and mental disorders on the abilities of abused individuals and the reduction of bad behavior among abused individuals through suppression of control training.
