Serum endogenous digitalis-like (EDF) concentrations in 41 patients with acute cerebrovascular disease (ACVD) and 50 normal controls were measured by radioimmunoassay. The results showed that the serum EDF concentration of ACVD patients was significantly higher than that of the normal control group (P <0.05), and closely correlated with the patient’s state of consciousness; suggesting that EDF changes can be used as predictors of the severity of ACVD. Elevated serum EDF may be related to the ACVD hypothalamic-pituitary system damage and (or) the body’s stress response.
