青年学者张宏杰在其新著《给曾国藩算算账:一个清代高官的收与支》一书中考证出了曾国藩做京官时期的收入构成,结论是灰色收入在曾国藩的总收入当中一直占相当比重。以道光二十一年曾国藩在翰林院上班时为例,他身为从七品京官,每年基本工资(正俸)四十五两,职务工资(恩俸)四十五两,粮食补贴(禄米)四十五斛(折合三十两),办公津贴(公费)一万五千三百五十三文(折合十两),全年所有合法收入加起来共有一百三十两。就在这一年,曾国藩至少收受了六名地方官馈赠
