1913年10月16日生于浙江绍兴(原籍浙江湖州)。1936年毕业于清华大学。1940年获法国国家博士学位。曾任法国国家科学研究中心研究员、研究导师。1948年回国后历任清华大学物理系教授,中国科学院副院长,浙江大学校长,中国科协名誉主席,中国核学会名誉理事长等。1955年被选聘为中国科学院学部委员。1985年获法兰西荣誉军团军官勋章。1992年6月28日卒于北京。
Born on October 16, 1913 in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province (original Huzhou, Zhejiang Province). In 1936 graduated from Tsinghua University. In 1940 he received a doctorate from France. Previously he was a researcher and research tutor at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. After returning to China in 1948, he has served as Professor of Physics at Tsinghua University, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, President of Zhejiang University, Honorary Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, and Honorary Chairman of China Nuclear Society. In 1955 he was appointed as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1985, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the French Legion of Honor. He died in Beijing on June 28, 1992.
