形象语言是以具体形象作比喻,来描绘事物的特征、本质规律或抽象的哲理,为人的思维提供一个有形、有色、有声的“映象”(image)。最常见的形象语言是成语、谚语、俗语或习语。一种语言的形象语言往往是它最为生动最有特色的部分。由于语言发展的共同规律,象英语和汉语这样源远流长、表现力丰富的语言往往又具有共同的表现方式,主要都是利用形象来取得生动的效果。正是因为英、汉语的表现方式有共同之处,英汉两民族对于某些共同的经历就会不谋而合地使用某种共同的形象词语,而且在语言的形式和内容(主要是使用的形象、色彩和含义、联想)上大体相当。如从手工打铁的体会想到要
