丁梅斯代尔和海丝特·白兰是《红字》这部爱情悲剧的两位主人公。丁梅斯代尔是一位有虔诚宗教意识的年轻牧师 ,受爱情驱使与年青、美丽、善良的海丝特·白兰相爱 ,并犯下了“通奸罪”。为了维护爱人的名誉海丝特·白兰勇敢地承担起罪责 ,宁愿终身佩戴血红的“A”字这一耻辱的标志 ,而不愿出卖爱人的名字 ,而丁梅斯代尔虽因良知的折磨但始终没有勇气和海丝特·白兰一起来分担这罪名 ,最终丁梅斯代尔因多年的精神折磨 ,而过早地丧失生命。造成悲剧的原因既不是丁梅斯代尔也不是海丝特本人 ,而是当时的虚伪的宗教所提倡的禁欲主义 ,使一对有情人不得不人间天上两分离
Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne are the two protagonists of this love tragedy. Dimmesdale, a young religious priest, was in love with the passionate young, beautiful and kindhearted Hester Prynne and committed “adultery.” In order to uphold the lover’s reputation Hester Prynne bravely assume the guilty, preferring to wear red blood throughout the life of the “A” word of the shame, rather than betray the name of his lover, but Dimmesdale because of the torture of conscience But he never had the courage to share the charges with Hester Prynne. Eventually, Dimmesdale lost his life prematurely because of many years of torture. The cause of the tragedy was neither Dimmesdale nor Hester himself, but the asceticism advocated by hypocritical religions at that time, so that a pair of lovers would have to separate heaven from heaven and earth
