March 24-27, 2005 National Basic Education Conference was held in Shanghai. Officials from relevant departments of the Ministry of Education attended the meeting with nearly 200 representatives from the Education Department (Education Commission) of all provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government) and the Education Bureau of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. Vice Minister of Education Chen Xiaoya reviewed the situation of basic education in 2004 and affirmed the progress made in various fields such as strengthening compulsory education in rural areas
