1985年,刘再复提出“文学主体性”引起论争,姚雪垠应邀投入论争。但由于姚雪垠匆忙上阵,将学术论争政治化,对现实的严重误判等因素,他在这场论争中惨遭失败。但是他所显示出的英雄的悲壮感和不畏艰难,敢于捍卫他心目中的真理的斗争精神还是十分可贵的。
