In sonic logging, the strata whose stratigraphic shear wave velocity is less than the fluid velocity in the well are usually called soft formations. To measure the shear wave velocity in soft formations, dipole sonar logging tools have been developed. For more than a decade, dipole sonic logging tools have provided a rich set of acoustic parameters related to soft formations, such as the anisotropy and heterogeneity of formations. With the development of dipole sonic instruments, quantitative measurements of the radial and longitudinal variations of the longitudinal and shear-wave velocities can now be achieved. This article focuses on the acoustic characteristics of the opal A diatom formation analyzed by the aforementioned method.
