In order to explore the emotional changes and countermeasures of medical staffs in the treatment of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), 1806 clinical frontline and second line medical staff in SARS designated hospitals were selected as the research objects, compared with 153 normal subjects . It was found that the self-rating depression scale (SDS) of health care workers had no significant difference from the general public; however, the scores of SDS among the health care workers were significantly higher than those of men. In the designated hospitals of SARS, the SDS scores of health care workers in the original infectious disease hospital (Beijing You’an Hospital and Ditan Hospital) were significantly higher than those in the normal control group. Prompted to strengthen the psychological counseling for workers, and mobilize the whole society to care for and support front-line staff to work together to weather the storm.
