Many, many years ago, there lived an emperor(2).He had a new coat for every hour of the day.
One day,two swindlers(3) came to this city?they made people believe(4) that they were weavers(5).They said the clothes they madepossessed(6) the wonderful quality(7) of being invisible(8)to any man who was unfit(9) for his office(10) or stupid(11).
The emperor gave a large sum of money to the swindlers. They set up two looms(12),and pretended (13) to be very hard at work, but they did nothing whatever on the looms.
“I should very much like to know how they are getting on with the cloth,” thought the emperor. Then he sent his honest(14) old minister(15) to the weavers. “I cannot see anything at all,” but the old minister did not say so. “Oh,it is very pretty.” he praised(16) the cloth, which he did not see. “It is very excellent(17),” he said to the emperor.
At last the emperor wished to see it himself, while it was still on the loom. “What is this?” thought the emperor, “I do not see anything at all. That is terrible(18) !Am I stupid?Am I unfit to be emperor? No,no,I cannot say that I was unable(19) to see the cloth.” So, he said,“Really! Your cloth has my gracious(20) approval(21),” and nodding(22) contentedly(23).
The swindlers then asked for more money,silk(24) and gold-cloth,which they required for weaving. Several days later, they pretended to take the cloth from the loom, and worked about in the air and said at last,“The emperor’s new suit is now ready.”
The emperor undressed(25),and the swindlers pretended to put the new suit upon him,one piece after another?and the emperor looked at himself in the glass from every side. “How well they look! How well they fit!” said all.
The emperor marched(26) in procession(27) under a beautiful canopy(28).“How well it fits him!” “What a beautiful pattern! What fine colours!” “That is a magnificent(29) suit of clothes!” Never were emperor’s clothesmore admired than now. “But he has nothing on at all,” said a little child at last. “But he has nothing on at all,” cried at last the whole people. That made a deep impression upon the emperor, for it seemed to him that they were right?but he thought to himself,“Now I must bear up to the end.”
