The effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) on the injury of peripheral nerves and the sensory neurons were studied by chemical sympathetic nerve endings injury in mice, mechanical damage of ulnar nerve in rabbits and the in vitro serum-free culture of neonatal rat dorsal root ganglion effect. The results showed that NGF dose-dependently increased the residual rate of norepinephrine in the submandibular gland of rats and increased the number of dorsal root ganglion (C7) and dorsal root ganglion (T1) in rabbits. It significantly promoted the growth of dorsal root ganglion neurons in neonatal rats. The results suggest that NGF has a significant protective effect on peripheral nerve injury and has a strong neurotrophic effect on sensory neurons.
