Silent Crisis More than half the deaths of children worldwide are linked to malnutrition, a ratio higher than any contagious disease since the onset of the Black Death. While malnutrition is not a contagious disease, millions of survivors are left with disabilities throughout their lives, vulnerable to illness and mental retardation. Undernutrition destroyed countless families and affected the survival and development of society as a whole, a violation of children’s rights. Malnutrition has long been considered a consequence of poverty and is now increasingly considered as a cause of poverty. However, the worldwide malnutrition crisis has not drawn the public’s attention.
