Copper sulfide can be processed using a variety of processes. The usual challenge is how to choose the treatment process when the ore phase changes with the life of the mine. In many copper sulphide mines, the plant must first treat secondary copper sulphide ore, and as the mining progresses, the proportion of harder primary copper sulphate increases. Primary sulphide ore should preferably be handled by the same plant, however, often associated with primary sulphide treatment is an increase in operating costs, a reduction in metal recovery, or an increase in investment resulting from changing primary processes to handle these primary sulphide mines. The challenge is to effectively recover copper and associated precious metals without any significant increase in investment costs or without an increase in operating costs. This article examines and compares the applicability of the Galvanox and Sepon processes for the treatment of hypothetical secondary and primary copper sulphide mixed ores. The Galvanox process is specifically designed for the treatment of primary sulphide copper ores and a minor modification of the process is proposed for the Sepon Copper Process Can effectively treat secondary and primary copper sulphide ore. This article describes and discusses the investment costs and operating costs for each type of process.
