Objective To analyze the monitoring results of deaths in medical institutions in Fujian Province in 2007 to find out the cause of death of deaths in medical institutions in Fujian Province and to grasp the trends of the changes and the causes of the quality of the reports of deaths monitoring. Methods According to the statistical data of SPSS12.0 statistical software, the death cases of the medical institutions in the province were directly reported through the network in 2007 and were audited and there were death cases with underlying death codes. Results Chronic diseases were the most common cause of death in medical institutions. The number one cause of death was 2577 cases of circulatory diseases, accounting for 22.46% of total deaths, followed by 2563 cases of cancer deaths (22.33%) and traffic accidents 2029 cases. The total number of deaths reported in 2007 has been further improved, but the death toll reported by the township (town) hospitals accounted for only 2.65% of the total reported deaths; the check-in time rate was significantly lower than that of 2006 (down by 19.70%); the coding error Compared with 2006, the rate increased by 21.29%. Conclusion Chronic diseases are the major cause of death in medical institutions. Among them, circulatory diseases, cancer and transport accidents are the leading causes of death among the top three residents. The quality of the cause of death report needs to be improved in medical institutions. In particular, the quality of the underlying cause of death coding remains a major problem. The reporting units of medical institutions at all levels should strengthen the training and management of related professional skills.
