叶永烈在接受采访时多次提到他的纪实文学写作坚持“大题材、高层次、第一手”的原则,但对其内涵并未解释;评论界论述叶永烈的著作时也多次引用这一说法,对其具体含义也未界定。笔者认为这三个词精准的概括了叶永烈纪实性史传文学创作的特点,笔者还结合叶永烈的创作实际,对“大题材、高层次、第一手”进行了更为合理的调序,即“大题材”——政治题材的独创性、“第一手”——史学的科学理性、“高层次”——文史结合的兼容性,并尝试以纪念改革开放三十周年而精心创作的《邓小平改变中国》为切入点,分析叶永烈史传报告文学的这三个特点以及叶永烈这三点的创作经验对史传报告文学发展的意义。
