由于出版物内容的多层次性与教育内涵的多层次性,出版物的教育特征及其功能并非三言两语所能概括。就阶段性的学校教育而言,出版物的教育特征是文化、科学等基础知识的传授;审美教育的传授;人文精神的培育等等。其功能则是实现“成人”教育,让生命个体在成长、成人的同时,在文化、精神层面同步成熟,认识到如何做人、做怎样的人。就社会教育而言,出版物的教育特征不仅在于生命个体生存技能的进一步补习、深化,更在于受众的认识自我、认识社会、认识世界,并明了自我与社会、世界之间的关系,认识“人”的概念的丰富内涵。
