Comparing the most memorable science fiction stories to the most brilliant detective novels I can conclude that the former is winning by conveying ideas, while the latter characterizing people. In the eyes of the world, detective novels have basically been stereotyped, the characters are hard to get rid of. We all still remember the knot in the novel “The Eagle of Malta.”
